Metadata and labels

I think alot about metadata, classification, and taxonomies. Yeah, I’m sort of weird that way. But the Web is all about it. You see lots of folksonomy sites, tagging implementations, and lots of faceted browses. We sort of take them for granted now, but they increase the retrievability of information.

Today I found one way that Google Images gets metadata for images. I use Google all the time to find images, and I often wondered how some metadata was assigned to some images. They have a community feature called Google Image Labeler that lets you go in and label pictures, with an online partner, until you hit a match. It tallies your score. I played it for a while and found that I did quite well, once I got the hang of it. Here’s the proof of best effort: 9th for the day! (I’m one of the guests)
